Despite the upcoming winter temperatures, construction has begun this week on another new business in the growing Saxony community.

Toledo, Ohio,-based Republic Development is building Saxony as a new urbanist concept community of 750 acres of houses, retailing, office buildings and other development around I-69's Exit 10 in eastern Fishers and Noblesville.

A groundbreaking this week will begin work on a 9,000-square-foot building for The Play School at Saxony, a child care facility in the middle of the residential part of the development.

Play School will be owned by Rita Ehlers, who also owns and operates Stony Creek Play School at 146th Street and Ind. 37 in Noblesville and Fall Creek Play School in Pendleton.

She said the facility, with a staff of about 20, could open by early summer.

Ehlers has operated Hamilton County child care centers since 1987, each licensed for about 125 children ages 6 weeks to 13 years. Reservations and information are available at the Stony Creek center at (317) 773-7695.

"This is a preschool environment but also with a curriculum-based school," she said. "The philosophy is to provide a well-rounded environment that meets the emotional and social and cognitive needs of each child."  Besides classrooms and other spaces arranged for age groups, the new building will include a multipurpose room that can be adapted for activities from sports to dance to tumbling. "I think the new building will have a homey feeling," Ehlers said.

It will be just west of Pennington Road and the new section of 131st Street, adjacent to a new section of Carriage Homes.
