You Can Save a Life - or Even Three
Each of us carries one of four general blood categories: O, A, B or AB. Within each, blood is labeled Rh positive or negative. The Indiana Blood Center explains that there are eight classifications commonly referred to as "blood type." From a donated unit of whole blood, Indiana Blood Center processes the donation into its component parts. Each donated unit can save up to three lives. Such is possible because what is transfused to a patient are the individual components derived from the whole blood, not the whole blood itself.
The transfusion of blood is essential in treating patients recovering from accident, illness or injury. For cancer patients, for instance, blood and component transfusions are part of their treatment regimen.
Some common uses of blood include:
Automobile Accident
4-40 units of red blood cells
Bone Marrow Transplant
1-2 units of red blood cells every other day for 2-4 weeks
6-8 units of platelets daily for 4-6 weeks
Leukemia
2-6 units of red blood cells
6-8 units of platelets daily for 2-4 weeks
Liver Transplant
6-10 units of red blood cells
20 units of plasma
10 units of platelets
Sickle Cell Disease
10-15 units of red blood cells to treat severe complications
Premature Newborn
1-4 units of red blood cells while in intensive care
